Decorating With Plastic Candy Canes For Christmas

Etsy
Our guide to plastic-free tinsel, including paper tinsel, fabric garlands and reusable bunting.
Despite being a traditional Christmas decoration, tinsel is not very eco-friendly. Lots of tinsel, whether it's tucked within the branches of the tree or wound around the banister, is made using non recyclable plastic or filmed paper. John Lewis & Partners said tinsel sales were up 11% in 2020, when the traditional Christmas decoration enjoyed a major revival. But, this year, we need to find a greener alternative.
If you already own plastic tinsel then take good care of it so it lasts as long as possible but, if you are buying new decorations this year, go for plastic-free tinsel or an alternative paper tinsel instead. Here's a few to try...
1 Econtinsel (Two colour) Red & Green garland
This Ecotinsel from Paperboy Crafts UK is made using 100% recycled paper and is, therefore, 100% recyclable. 8m long, it is handcrafted in UK and comes in eco-friendly packaging with care instructions. It comes in a wide variety of colours.
2 Christmas Paper tinsel

£4.00
This paper tinsel is jolly, colourful and plastic-free.
3 2M Hanging Eucalyptus Garland Artificial
Go for a natural look with this faux foliage garland, great for bulking out a slim tree or adorning the banister.
4 Christmas Paper Chain Kit
Try a paper chain kit or make your own using old wrapping paper or Christmas cards.
5 Create Your Own Festive Garland
If you tend to add a little tinsel to your Christmas mantelpiece, why not opt for festive foliage from the garden instead?
Holly and ivy works well in this to garland with a few candles, ribbons and pine cones.
6 Jolie Noel Paper Bunting
We're also very taken with this paper bunting design from Rex London. It will add just the right amount of festive cheer to bare walls, and still be a favourite next year too.
7 Make Your Own Paper Wreath
Impress your guests with a handmade paper wreath, designed by Country Living's Deputy Home and Style Editor, Alaina Binks.
It's incredibly simple and looks amazing! Follow her step-by-step guide to craft yours.
You could make a straight version too which will look and behave more like tinsel.
